Niagara Voice Program
The Niagara Voice Program is a dynamic interdisciplinary team specializing in the treatment of voice disorders.
When you talk, the sound you produce comes from the vibration of two small bands of muscle known as the vocal folds. Sometimes something can interfere with the smooth vibration of these muscles, and it can cause your voice to sound different.
The voice treatment team, consisting of Speech-Language Pathologists, a Social Worker, and a consulting Otolaryngologist (ENT), are trained to determine what might be causing the difficulties you are experiencing. The voice assessment process includes:
- Videostroboscopy (video images of your vocal folds);
- Voice use profile;
- Computer analysis of vocal functioning;
- Consultation with an Otolaryngologist; and
- Psychosocial Screening.
Following assessment, most patients are asked to attend 3 Pre-Treatment Voice Education classes where they will be provided with:
- Voice education;
- Voice care techniques;
- Introduction to voice exercises; and
- Introduction to stress and stress management.
Patients are encouraged to already begin making some of the changes that are identified for them during the initial assessment and pre-treatment. Treatment is then provided through individual therapy or specialized treatment groups such as groups for seniors, teachers, actors or vocalists. Treatment provides instruction in the following areas:
- Proper breathing for speech;
- Pitch and tone correction;
- Relaxation techniques; and
- Lifestyle changes.
If you feel that your voice is too loud or too soft, if it is weak or tired, if it sounds hoarse, harsh or strained, or if your singing range is limited, you may benefit from a referral to the Niagara Voice Program.
