Reducing the Chance of Falls
Accidental slips or falls may occur in a healthcare facility as patients recover from
treatment. We would like you to help us reduce your chance of having a fall while
you are our patient.
Reasons for accidental slips or falls:
- You may feel weak or dizzy from your illness, tests, medication or surgery.
- You may not be used to calling for help to get out of bed or to go to the bathroom.
- You may be confused by your new surroundings in the hospital.
- Your clothing and footwear may not be safe for your hospital stay.
Tips to Help Reduce the Chance of Falling
- When you are up, wear slippers or shoes that have a firm fit and non-slip soles.
- When you are in hospital, do not wear clothing that drags on the floor.
- When you get out of bed or up from a chair, move slowly.
- If you feel weak or dizzy when you get out of bed or up from a chair, push the call bell for help.
- If you wear glasses or a hearing aid at home, please wear them while you are in the hospital.
- Do not lean on tables, chairs or hospital equipment; some of these move easily and maybe on wheels.
If you have any questions please ask your nurse.
