Treatment Phase
There are two phases of the Amputee Program: Acute Rehab Phase and Prosthetic Rehab Phase.
Each phase of the Amputee Programme may include:
- individual treatment
- skill training sessions
- group education
- exercise groups
Follow-up Amputee Clinic
Amputee clinic takes place at Niagara Prosthetics and Orthotics. Patients are seen by a government-registered team of professionals including a physician, a prosthetist and a physiotherapist or an occupational therapist.
A patient may be referred to Amputee Clinic for the following reasons:
to ensure the patient is continuing to manage well upon completion of the prosthetic rehab phase
assessment to determine when a patient is ready for a permanent prosthesis
assessment to determine eligibility for a new prosthesis
to fulfill Assistive Devices Program (ADP) criteria that individuals receiving ADP funding be followed by a registered Amputee team.
Niagara Orthotics and Prosthetics located at Hotel Dieu Shaver makes made-to-measure prosthetic limbs and provides on-site expertise in the fitting and repair of prostheses.

Arthritis Program
This is an interdisciplinary and specialty rehabilitation program for individuals with complex arthritic conditions.
The Arthritis Program is designed to:
Provide interdisciplinary therapy services for patients diagnosed with complex arthritic conditions
Provide specialty therapy not available in the community
Include assessment, treatment, consultation and education to patients, family members, and community practitioners Educate patients in self-management strategies
Commonly Treated Diagnoses:
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Lupus
Polymyositis
Scleroderma
Ankylosing Spondylitis
Psoriatic Arthritis
Inflammatory Osteoarthritis (multiple joint involvement)

Note to physicians: Your patient will be assessed by an OT or PT who will determine therapy goals and a plan of care. They may also refer to other therapies as necessary.

Trauma Program
An interdisciplinary rehabilitation program for individuals with post operative, acute and/or complex orthopedic conditions.
The Trauma Program is designed to:
Provide interdisciplinary therapy services for patients diagnosed with complex orthopedic conditions.
Provide specialty therapy not available in the community.
Include assessment, treatment, consultation and education to patients, family members, and community practitioners.
Educate patients in self-management strategies.

This program is designed to:
Provide specialized therapy services for patients diagnosed with dysfunction, disease or trauma to the upper extremity
Include assessment, treatment, consultation and education to patients, family members, and community practitioners
Educate patients in self-management strategies
