Recreation Therapy Services
Service Model: "Leisure Ability"
To facilitate the development, maintenance and expression of an appropriate leisure lifestyle for individuals with physical, cognitive, social or emotional limitations. The selection, development, implementation and evaluation of goal-oriented treatment, leisure education and recreation participation services based on individual assessment and program referral procedures.
Goals:
- Assist with adjustment to disability/illness
- Identify barriers to leisure and help patient find solutions
- Skills training: computer use, Internet, e-mail, use of public transportation
- Provide opportunities for social interaction
- Provide opportunities for participation in leisure activity
- Connect to community resources for leisure: library, day programs, March of Dimes, Paratransit, seniors centers, etc.
- Community outings assist with normalization and independence
- Build self-confidence
- Practical application of techniques learned in therapy

** Programs are offered both in groups and one to one.
Reasons For Referral To Recreation Therapy:
- Individuals with diagnoses that have long-term implications resulting in adjustment to changes in lifestyle
- Individuals dealing with grief and bereavement
- Individuals who are/were socially active
- Individuals who are depressed
- Individuals with little or no social supports
- Individuals demonstrating difficulty with adjustment to hospitalization, illness, disability or emotional coping

Leisure Education - expected outcomes
- Patient has reduced major functional limitations that prohibit or significantly limit leisure involvement (or has learned ways to overcome these barriers)
- Patient understands and values the importance of leisure in the totality of life experiences
- Patient incorporates leisure into his or her daily life
- Patient has adequate social skills for involvement with others
- Patient is able to choose between several leisure activity options on a daily basis and make decisions for leisure participation
- Patient is able to locate and use leisure resources as necessary
- Patient has increased perceptions of choice, motivation, freedom, responsibility, causality and independence with regard to his or her leisure
