Hotel Dieu Shaver Declares Outbreak of Upper Respiratory Illness

Posted Feb 8th, 2018 in News

A respiratory outbreak has been declared on the west end of the second floor of Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre’s in-patient building after three patients developed respiratory symptoms. The patients have been tested and the results are pending. The case definition for this outbreak is cough, congestion, malise with or without a fever. All patients who meet the case definition are placed on isolation precautions.

The outbreak can be declared over 8 days after onset of the last case of respiratory illness.

The measures implemented and heightened during the outbreak are:

Ø Practicing good hand hygiene when entering and exiting the unit and patients room.

Ø Always using routine practices when caring for patients.

Ø Following isolation precautions by wearing mask, eye protection, gloves and gowns when entering the patient’s room or bed space.

Ø Cohorting of patients and nursing staff.

Ø Cleaning of equipment that is used for patient care (i.e. stethoscope, commode, BP machines etc).

Ø Symptomatic staff are excluded from work and being followed by Occupational Health Nurse.

Ø Asking families and visitors to practice proper hand hygiene and follow isolation precautions.

Ø Environmental services have been increased to provide extra cleaning of high touched surfaces (i.e. bedrails, tables, bathrooms, etc) on the unit.

An Outbreak Management Team has been formed and will meet regularly until the outbreak has been declared over. This committee will review the situation and make recommendations.
