At Hotel Dieu Shaver, we are committed to building a future that reflects the needs, hopes, and realities of our patients, staff, and community. With that commitment in mind, I’m proud to share that we have officially entered a pivotal phase of our hospital expansion project — the Functional Program stage — and this work is already progressing well.
Two weeks ago, we were proud to announce details surrounding the latest stage of our expansion project, and this past week, we continued building momentum by launching the first round of user group sessions — collaborative planning meetings that bring together the very people who know our hospital best. These groups include (but are not limited to):
- Administrative Services
- Complex Care
- Education, Research, Technology & Business Development
- Hotel Dieu Shaver Foundation
- Inpatient Rehabilitation
- Patient and Family Advisors / Volunteers
- Pharmacy
- Physicians
- Spiritual Care
- Support Services
These sessions are the heartbeat of the functional planning process. They provide space for in-depth conversations around how care is delivered today, what physical spaces help (or hinder) that care, and what we envision for a more accessible, more compassionate, and more efficient hospital tomorrow.
From where we deliver treatment, to where we hold family conversations… to how our equipment is stored… and by considering how light filters into a patient room — every detail matters when you’re designing a healthcare environment that heals. That’s why input from those who live and work in this space every day is not just welcome — it’s essential.
I want to thank everyone who participated in this first round of meetings. Your ideas, stories, and experiences will directly shape the services, flow, and function of our future home.
Together with our project partners at HDR Architecture Associates Inc. and Resource Planning Group Inc., we are focused on building a Rehabilitation hospital that reflects our values, amplifies our care, and prepares us for the changing needs of our Niagara community.
More updates to come as our planning continues.
With appreciation,
Dr. David Ceglie
