At Hotel Dieu Shaver, we are proud to recognize Dr. Joseph Michaels as the recipient of the 2026 RHSJ Physician Excellence Award.
Rooted in the mission, vision, and values of Hotel Dieu Shaver -- and the healing mission of the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph (RHSJ) -- this annual award honours a physician who demonstrates excellence in person- and family-centred care, including dignity and respect, information sharing, participation, and collaboration.
This year’s award was presented on Doctors’ Day (May 1), where we were pleased to celebrate all three nominees for their outstanding contributions. Each nominee exemplifies the high standard of care and compassion that defines our physician community, and we extend our sincere thanks to all who were recognized.
Since joining Hotel Dieu Shaver in June 2024, Dr. Michaels has made a remarkable impact on our patients, staff, and organization. Known for his calm, thoughtful approach, he takes the time to truly listen -- ensuring patients and families feel heard, supported, and confident in their care.
Colleagues consistently highlight Dr. Michaels’ collaborative spirit and respect for the interprofessional team. He communicates clearly, values input from others, and fosters a positive environment that supports high-quality, patient-centred care.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Michaels serves as our Digital Physician Lead, where he plays a key role in advancing innovations that enhance communication, continuity, and patient safety. His leadership ensures that new technologies support -- not replace -- the human connection that is essential to healing.
Dr. Michaels also demonstrates a deep commitment to inclusive care, tailoring his approach to reflect the unique needs, values, and backgrounds of each patient he serves. His ability to integrate compassion, innovation, and collaboration makes him a trusted clinician and leader within our organization.
