Stroke Awareness Month: Celebrating Progress in Stroke Care — and the Road Ahead

Posted Jun 30th, 2026 in News

Every five minutes, someone in Canada experiences a stroke. For the more than one million Canadians living with the effects of stroke, timely access to specialized care and rehabilitation can make all the difference in recovery.

As Stroke Awareness Month comes to a close, Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre is reflecting on the progress that has transformed stroke care across Canada -- and reaffirming our commitment to helping patients regain independence and rebuild their lives.

This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations, a nationally recognized framework that has helped standardize stroke prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery across the country.

Developed through the leadership of Heart & Stroke and stroke experts from across Canada, these evidence-based recommendations have played a pivotal role in improving patient outcomes and advancing integrated stroke systems of care.

At Hotel Dieu Shaver, these best practices are more than guidelines -- they are reflected in the care we provide every day.

Last year, HDS was proud to receive Stroke Distinction™ from Accreditation Canada, recognizing our organization's commitment to excellence in stroke rehabilitation and our alignment with the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations.

This designation reflects the dedication of our interdisciplinary teams and our ongoing partnership with Niagara Health, Hamilton Health Sciences, and Windsor Regional Hospital as part of the Central South Regional Stroke Network.

Every patient's stroke journey is unique, but the goal remains the same: helping individuals recover function, regain independence, and return to the activities that matter most to them.

As the only rehabilitation hospital in Niagara, Hotel Dieu Shaver is proud to play a leading role in stroke rehabilitation, delivering compassionate, evidence-informed care that gives patients the best possible opportunity for recovery.

As we recognize Stroke Awareness Month, we thank our physicians, staff, volunteers, partners, patients, and families for their ongoing commitment to advancing stroke care in Niagara.

Together, we continue to restore health, rebuild lives, and renew hope.

A stroke can be a life-changing event, and recovery is a journey that requires the right support, care, and resources.

At Hotel Dieu Shaver, we are committed to helping stroke survivors regain their independence and improve their quality of life through specialized rehabilitation programs. In partnership with the client, our Stroke Program offers treatment and education in both individual and group settings.
